Google AI Mode answers from your profile.

We measured it: on 18 identical local questions, ChatGPT and Google AI Mode agreed on almost nothing — because AI Mode builds its answer from Business Profile cards (rating · review count · category · buttons) and never surfaces a word of your website. And the gate isn’t stars: AI Mode happily lists 3.0-rated businesses with one review. The gate is completeness, the right category, and review text that describes what you do. This checklist is that gate, in order.

THE CHEAPEST FIX WE’VE EVER FOUND: our own customer zero, the founder’s family business, was missing the website field on an otherwise-fine profile — a free, two-minute fix that no amount of content writing would have touched. Check the dumb stuff first.

STEP 1 / LOOK AT THE BATTLEFIELD

See the cards you’re competing with.

Open AI Mode on your own category and read the 2–3 cards it shows. Note what the winners’ cards display: their exact category, their review counts, and — click into them — whether their review text mentions the services you sell.

STEP 2 / THE GATE, AS A CHECKLIST

Work it top to bottom. The order is the priority.

0% 0 OF 0 CHECKED COMPLETENESS IS THE GATE WE MEASURED. NOBODY CAN GUARANTEE A RANKING

STEP 3 / THE REVIEW-TEXT ENGINE

Reviews that describe you beat reviews that rate you.

AI Mode’s picks skew toward profiles whose review text matches the question. List your top services; for each, check whether at least one review’s text actually mentions it. An unchecked row is a service your reviews say nothing about yet. The way to change that is to ask every customer from those jobs for an honest review and leave the words to them: Google forbids asking for specific content.

THE RULES THAT KEEP YOUR PROFILE ALIVE: ask every real customer, right after a real job, for an honest review in their own words. Never suggest what to write: Google’s policy forbids requesting specific content. Never pay or incentivize a review. Never filter — sending only happy customers to Google is against policy. Never, ever fake one: a single caught fake can suppress the whole profile, which on AI Mode means you stop existing.

STEP 4 / SWEEP THE DUPLICATES

A second listing splits you in half.

Search Google Maps for your name, old trade names, misspellings, and previous addresses. A duplicate listing splits your reviews and confuses the card — and a wrong founding year or old hours on some directory usually traces to one data aggregator feeding them all. Fix the upstream source, or the wrong data reappears after every cleanup.

STEP 5 / RE-MEASURE

The checklist isn’t the score. The answers are.

When the boxes are green, give Google a couple of weeks, then re-run your questions in the Baseline Kit and watch the Google AI Mode column specifically. That column moving while ChatGPT holds still is the shape of a profile fix. One re-run is one reading, though, so do the stability spot-check too. It tells you how much of a move is noise.
